Pressure washing and power washing are often used interchangeably, but there is one key distinction between the two. Both methods use high-pressure water to blast away dirt, grime, mold, and buildup from surfaces — but power washing adds heat to the equation. Power washing uses hot water, which makes it especially effective at breaking down grease, oil stains, and stubborn organic matter that cold water alone struggles to remove.

For most residential surfaces like driveways, sidewalks, patios, and siding, pressure washing gets the job done extremely well. Power washing is typically the better choice for heavily soiled commercial surfaces, dumpster pads, restaurant exteriors, or anywhere grease and oil have had time to set in. Generally speaking, you can expect power washing to run 20–30% more than a comparable pressure washing job. For most homeowners, pressure washing is the more cost-effective choice and delivers excellent results. However, for jobs involving grease, heavy oil, deep-set commercial grime, gum, or paint removal, the extra cost of power washing is the better choice — and often the only method that will truly get the surface clean.

Unlike standard pressure or soft washing, where square footage drives most of the pricing, these jobs depend heavily on the type of surface involved, how long the staining or vandalism has been there, and how deeply it has set in.
